When I look now at my ten year old daughter I can hardly believe she was just a small baby when we moved from a two bed flat in Chelsea and into 23 Gilpin Avenue. It was the best decision we ever made. Lily?s brother, Freddie, came along shortly after and our gorgeous, spacious Edwardian house felt like the perfect family home. There was so much space, the children had a lovely garden to play in and the people of Sheen were so friendly. We actually spoke to our neighbours, something that was unheard of where we lived before and within two days of moving in, a lovely girl from up the road had knocked on the door to offer her babysitting services! I took this to be an excellent sign.
East Sheen has so much going for it in terms of bringing up a family. Firstly, the schools are incredible. Both of mine went to the nursery at the top of the road by the church and now go to East Sheen Primary. The school was one of the very big reasons why we moved here in the first place. It?s rated outstanding by Ofsted and to be able to walk to school in the morning, along with all their friends is such a luxury. The parks and green spaces in Sheen are also fantastic, not just Richmond park but Palewell Park too, which is just a few minutes up the road.
When the children were little, I loved being able to stroll up to Palewell, knowing that we would bump into their friends and that no more entertainment need be provided. In the summer we?d end up having picnics and ice creams there and staying out long past their bedtime because they were all having so much fun. I?ve also spent many a cold, rainy, Saturday morning there, watching the boy child play football along with hundreds of other muddy little lads, thankful that there is somewhere where you can buy a nice hot coffee!
We have always felt so safe and happy here and the sense of community makes you feel like you?re not in London even though you are. That being said I am a freelance writer and presenter so frequently need to be able to pop in and out of town for meetings, jobs and castings. The commute is easy. Twenty minutes to Vauxhall and you?re on the Victoria line, hop on a bus to Hammersmith and you?re on the Piccadilly line, or spend an extra three minutes on the train and arrive in Waterloo. Sheen really is very good for transport.
23 Gilpin Avenue is an extremely happy house and has seen countless parties, dinners, Christmases?, children?s parties, sleepovers and some pretty legendary New Year?s Eve bashes. We have always loved entertaining and spending time with friends and family which is why we decided to ?do? the kitchen. I hope that whoever lives there next continues to enjoy and love the house as much as we have. I?m sure they will.
