As well as a selection of pubs and bars, Hammersmith boasts some interesting and slightly different evening entertainment. The Hammersmith Apollo, an impressive Grade II listed building, is home to some of the most eagerly anticipated concerts and performances in the country. The well-renowned Riverside Studios, a unique arts and media space, is currently undergoing redevelopment and hosts dance and theatre events as well as operating as an independent cinema.
Best theatre destination
Lyric is a vibrant, modern theatre with a café in the roof garden and an eclectic selection of shows. Alongside re-workings of classic plays, the theatre hosts experimental pieces, physical theatre and children’s productions.
There are small green spaces throughout Hammersmith and Ravenscourt Park is also in the area: a large park with tennis courts, a basketball court, bowling green, lake and children’s play area.
The River Thames is nearby and provides a pleasant riverside walk as well as a prime position to watch the annual Oxford vs Cambridge boat race.
Hammersmith is home a variety of food shops, gastropubs and restaurants featuring food from all around the world. King Street is the main destination for keen shoppers, with high street brands, pubs, cafés and supermarkets. Westfield London is also easily accessible by car and public transport for those after a longer shopping trip: the centre boasts a huge number of high street and high-end shops, pop up stalls and a number of places for dining and drinking.
A Farmers Market is held in Lyric Square every Thursday, providing local fresh produce and organic products. The market is best known, however, for its enviable selection of street food, inspired by cuisine from all over the world. There are a number of specialist stalls and products that join the market at Christmas.
Sacred Heart High School is a leading Catholic School and The Godolphin & Latymer School is an independent day school with a strong academic record.
As well as good train links, Hammersmith is well served by a number of buses and the A4 conveniently runs nearby. Overground and Southern trains run from Kensington (Olympia) and Shepherd’s Bush stations.
