Living in Southfields

A Chestertons area guide to Southfields

Example Background

Welcome to Southfields

Southfields’ main residential area is known as “The Grid”: a group of parallel streets intersecting at right-angles.  The Grid consists mainly of terraced Edwardian houses, some of which have previously been converted into flats.  There is also terraced housing along Wimbledon Park Road.  The area maintains an English village feel and is a practical place to live, with shops, banks and even a hardware store on Replingham Road, the main road running through Southfields.

  • Entertainment & nightlife

Throughout Southfields there are a number of local pubs with a relaxed, community atmosphere.  For those after something a little different, Garratt Lane, which runs near Southfields shopping centre and King George’s Park, is home to a number of evening venues.  Neighbouring Earlsfield also has a growing number cocktail bars and pubs, occasionally offering craft beers from local microbreweries.

  • Parks & recreation

King George’s Park is a beautiful park in the area, bordered on the East by the River Wandle.  The park is home to formal gardens, an impressive bowling green, tennis courts and a lake and is perfect for those looking to get active.  Those after for a tranquil day outside can head to nearby Wimbledon Common, which includes a nature trail and memorial feature.  There are also smaller green spaces within Southfields, and a swimming pool located near The Grid itself.

  • Restaurants & shopping

Replingham Road is home to essential shops, cafes, banks, restaurants and good quality butchers and bakers.  Southfields Shopping Centre has recently been redone and hosts a number of high-street brands for those after a longer shopping trip.  Within the centre there is also a gym, cinema and number for places for dining.  On the main road at the end of The Grid, Merton Road, is an old-time neighbourhood pub; a local favourite for its Sunday roasts.

  • Schools

Notable primary schools in the area include Sheringdale, St Michael’s CofE, Linden Lodge, Riversdale and Wimbledon Park, with secondary schools including Linden Lodge, Garrat Park, St Cecilia’s, Wandsworth CofE, Burntwood and Southfields Academy.

  • Transport & travel

Nearby Wimbledon station provides mainline travel into the city.  There are two tube stations in the area:
    Southfields – District Line
    Wimbledon Park – District Line

I went to Wimbledon before I could walk. It's just been a lifelong passion.
