Chestertons Monaco

An independent and sovereign state, the Principality of Monaco borders with the communes of Cap.d'Ail, Beausoleil and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (from west to east) of the French department of Alpes-Maritimes and with the Mediterranean Sea.

Tourism drives Monaco's economy; from Casino gamblers in Monte-Carlo to the Monaco Grand Prix hosted every year in May.

The country is considered a major banking centre and it's one of the most expensive and luxurious destinations in Europe.

Inaugurated in 1863, the Monte Carlo casino was conceived to save Monaco's House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy.

Area Guide

The world-renowned casino was built in 1878 by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Opera House in Paris. The casino has been featured in multiple "James Bond" movies and is perhaps the most iconic building in the tiny principality.

Other popular attractions include, the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium, which was inaugurated in 1910 by its founder - Prince Albert 1- and the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium, an exceptional museum of marine sciences which is a monumental architectural masterpiece with a grandiose fa├žade, rising sheer above the sea to a height of 85 metres.

The Exotic Garden is one of Monaco's finest tourist attractions and was opened in 1933. This beautiful garden contains several thousand plant varieties and is daringly landscaped on the rock-face. The plants flourish superbly, thus testifying to Monaco's micro-climate and are admired by visitors from all over the world.

In addition, the observatory caves are a must-see with its stalagmites, stalactites and limestone concretions beautifully illuminated and the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, which contains a series of priceless burial places originating from localities in the vicinity of the Principality, notably Grimaldi, in Italian Liguria. This museum was founded in 1902 by Prince Albert 1.
