Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon, known for its impressive bridges and port wine production. The medieval Ribeira (riverside) district was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Some of the main city attractions include the 14th-century São Francisco Church, known for its baroque interior with ornate gilded carvings and the magnificent 19th-century Palácio de Bolsa, formerly a stock market and built to impress potential European investors.
Porto is world-renowned for Port wine, which is matured in the cellars (referred to as caves) that spread over the southern banks of the Douro River. There are informative tours available that explain the traditional elaboration processes with the chance to taste some of the finest Port wines.
