Chestertons Mission In Going Green

Chestertons recently became certified as Net Zero Carbon and now offsets twice as many carbon emissions as it produces. Going green doesn't stop there, throughout the year we will be releasing a series of ‘Going Green’ initiatives in the hope of inspiring others to make small lifestyle changes that collectively have a big impact.

This month we want to bring attention to food waste. Food production alone accounts for an estimated 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions and when we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it. An estimated 4.5 million tonnes of food is wasted each year in the UK, and when that goes to landfills it rots and produces the greenhouse gas methane. Approximately 11% of all the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food.

Here are six other easy changes you can make, that will better the environment one small step at a time:

  • Use a reusable coffee cup.
  • Use a canvas bag to replace plastic bags when shopping.
  • Love your leftovers – treat ‘food waste’ as ingredients for another meal. Get creative and find new ways to use everything up.
  • Minimise packaging when food shopping.
  • Purchase more plants to create cleaner air.
  • Recycle as much as you can – most major supermarkets provide plastic recycling for stretchy plastic (carrier bags etc) which councils may not accept.
