Chestertons has collected over 3,000 coats in just one month to help the Calling London Winter Coat Campaign achieve its most successful year of its nine-year history. The charity collected nearly 7,000 coats and fleeces in total, which are now being distributed to charities in and around London.
To help reach these record numbers of coats, for the sixth year, Chestertons turned each of its high street branches into collection points and worked with clients, staff, local community groups, businesses and schools to generate awareness of the cause.
Thousands of donations were made by so many generous people throughout November with one individual member of staff managing to collect 234 coats alone, but the biggest donation came from Chestertons’ Gibraltar office, which collected and shipped an impressive 685 coats to London.
Following the collection, a number of Chestertons’ staff used their annual ‘volunteer day’ to join other volunteers over the weekend sorting through all donations.
Coats are being delivered to over 40 charities and shelters across the capital, including: homelessness charity St Mungo’s (Chestertons’ nominated charity), Crisis at Christmas, Help our Homeless, Dress for Success, Suited & Booted, Hestia and a number of food banks that offer users clothing as well as food.
The Calling London Winter Coat Campaign was established in 2011 by Frances Manthos to help Londoners in need keep warm during the cold winter months. Since launching, the campaign has continued to reach more people, of all ages, who are sleeping rough or unable to afford a winter coat.
Frances says: “I have been so impressed with Chestertons and the enthusiasm of the branches who put flyers through mailboxes, approached local schools, handed out colouring pictures to children and used social media to publicise the collection. A huge thank you to everyone at Chestertons. Because of them, every year the Winter Coat campaign gets bigger and better. We jumped from collecting 5,000 coats last year to 7,000 coats this year. It’s fantastic as it means we can help more people get that coat they so urgently need.
A big thank you also goes to staff who gave up their time to come and volunteer. It was an enormous task, but one that was done with so much energy.”
