Independent, but never alone: the value of shared experience in a global network

Every agency owner knows the moment. A senior hire, a second office, a client relationship that needs a difficult conversation, or a quarter where the phone goes quiet. The decision is yours, and it should be. But before you make it, who do you talk it through with?

Across the Chestertons Global network, that question sits close to the heart of why the network exists. It is especially on our minds this week, as we prepare to welcome affiliates to Paphos for the Chestertons Global Conference 2026.

The quiet cost of carrying every decision alone

Independence is usually the reason you built your own agency. You set the standards, choose your people and make the calls without waiting for approval from anyone else.

That freedom comes with a weight that is rarely discussed openly. A YouGov survey for the British Business Bank found that 44% of smaller business owners in the UK have felt lonely or isolated while running their business.

Much of that isolation is structural. Your team looks to you for answers, so sharing uncertainty with them can feel like a risk. Local peers are often direct competitors. Your accountant, lawyer and bank each see one part of the business, but rarely the whole of it.

The result is that some of the most consequential decisions you make are made in a very small room.

When your own experience becomes the echo chamber

Working through problems alone means testing ideas against your own experience. That experience is valuable, but it has limits.

A challenge can start to feel unique to your market or your moment. Approaches that worked five years ago get repeated without anyone asking whether conditions have changed. Ideas that would benefit from a second opinion go unchallenged, simply because nobody else is in the conversation.

This is not a question of judgement. It is a question of perspective, and perspective is very hard to generate on your own.

Someone has already been where you are

In conversations with agency owners across our network, one pattern comes up again and again: the problems that feel most isolating are rarely as unique as they seem. Someone in another market has usually faced a version of the same question, tried something, and learned from it.

Owners elsewhere recognise this too. Huntington Bank’s 2026 Beyond Business Report found that nearly half of business owners turn to other owners or colleagues for advice, and described making critical decisions in isolation as a business risk in its own right.

Within the Chestertons Global network, the range of experience is wide. Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman, Executive Chairman of Rahim & Co | Chestertons, was recently recognised for more than five decades in real estate and public service. Affiliates such as Chestertons Romania publish their own quarterly market analysis, drawing on what their teams see on the ground. And this year alone, the network has welcomed new affiliates in Nice, Cannes, the Cayman Islands and St Vincent & the Grenadines, each bringing a fresh view of their own market.

That range is the point. An owner building cross-border referral relationships for the first time can learn from someone who has done it for years. An established agency weighing a change can hear how a newer affiliate approached the same question with fresh eyes. The value flows in both directions.

Independent by design, connected by choice

This balance is built into how the Chestertons Global affiliation model works. Every affiliate operates as a fully independent business. We do not take a share of revenue and we do not direct operations, a principle we set out in more detail in four questions every agency owner should ask before joining a network.

You keep your systems, your team and your client relationships. Some affiliates trade under the Chestertons name, while others operate as dual brands, retaining the identity they have built.

What the network adds is the room around you: referral relationships across markets, marketing support, and regular touchpoints through the year, from monthly online meetings to the annual conference. These are not there to tell you how to run your business. They are there so that when you face a difficult decision, you have people to test it against who understand the journey because they are on it too.

Why Paphos matters

The Chestertons Global Conference 2026 takes place in Paphos, Cyprus, from 15 to 17 October, under the theme “Connecting Markets. Creating Opportunities.” It builds on last year’s conference, which brought together affiliates, partners and guests from more than 20 countries.

This year’s programme includes a session led by John Stevens, CEO of Chestertons MENA, titled “Built on Trust: The New Rules of Global Real Estate Partnership.” Trust is a fitting thread for the conference. Shared learning only works when people feel able to be candid about what has not gone to plan, as well as what has.

The agenda matters. But often the most valuable moments happen between sessions: a conversation over coffee with an owner who solved last year the problem you are facing now, or an honest exchange about a decision that did not work out and why.

If you are joining us in Paphos, it is worth arriving with one question you have been carrying on your own, and leaving with a few more perspectives on it. And if you run an independent agency outside the network and recognise yourself in any of this, we would welcome a conversation. Join the conversation or contact us at global@chestertons.com.
